Legends form part of a country’s memory. Therefore, this book is a compilation of the memory of Ecuador. Thirteen legends wrapped up in reality and magic, history and custom, the dreams and the beliefs of the Ecuadoreans. At the end, Mario Conde, author of Cuentos ecuatorianos de aparecidos (Grupo Editorial Norma, 2005), has brought us a story from Guayaquil called “A Ghost”. Such a story, a hybrid of legend and ghost story, corresponds to a new genre known as the urban legend. This is the reason for its inclusion in the book. Moreover, the title conveys an evocatively resonant mysteriousness.

Al final, Mario Conde, autor de Cuentos ecuatorianos de aparecidos (Grupo Editorial Norma, 2005) incluye una historia de Guayaquil titulada Un fantasma. Tal historia, un híbrido entre la leyenda y los cuentos de aparecidos, corresponde al nuevo género llamado leyenda urbana. Este el motivo de su inclusión en el libro. Además, le confiere al título una sugestiva resonancia de misterio.
